RE: ??Things to do Around Elk Neck SP (MD)??

We just got back from our first trip there with 2 and 4 year olds in tow.
My advise and observations:
- The river beach is not within walking distance from the cg and will require a little downhill hike from the parking area. Be sure to bring water shoes as the beach and river bottom are extremely rocky -- not sharp, but uncomfortable for bare feet!
- North East is cute! We didn't even stop though. Woody's was very busy all the time during the weekend. We decided to go to Charlestown instead to the River Shack, where we could get steamed crabs and other good seafood and draft beer. They also have an outside seating area with sand!
- We were in North East loop sites #10 and 12, which were huge and level. If you have older kids, be sure to bring the bikes and helmets. Even the 2 years olds enjoyed riding our on their big wheels. The circle wasn't level, but the sidewalks around the bathhouse worked great for this purpose.
- There was a little park in our loop, North East - just swings and slides. There was a huge new on set nearer the tent sites and another by the camp store.
- The bathhouse in our loop was relatively clean. We didn't use it much though.
- Our kids really enjoyed the hike to the lighthouse. We did have one umbrella stroller and most of the hike was ok for it. The other 2 yr old was in the backpack carrier and that worked out great. Hold hands of little walkers though! There are some scary cliffs!
- We didn't stray any farther than the above and were fine for a 3 night stay. A few mornings with coloring book action at the picnic table and some plastic pool time tided us over for entertainment.
Have a great time!

RE: Ever been a prisoner in a campground??

Hoosier,
Your points and my own experiences have convinced this ol' lib to your side ;)
Last summer the horrible effects of water contamination hit me around 11 pm on our first night at Point Lookout SP in the middle of nowhere Maryland. We had a hard enough time getting a cell phone signal to call 911 to get me out of there -- I can't imagine if we would have had to deal with a locked gate situation . . . and then to have had to deal with not being able to get back in at 5 am after a couple of bags of fluid . . . well, I had a bad enough trip at that point . . . I learned on that trip to always learn where the nearest ER is and how to call 911 if there's no cell signal. Today I've learned to ask about a gate policy upon reservation. Thanks, all! :)

Elk Neck SP, MD on July 4th

Hello! We will be staying at Elk Neck for the first time on the July 4th weekend. I am looking for a couple of pieces of advice for our trip:
1. Where would be a good place to see fireworks?
2. We have a 2 yr old and a 4 yr old. What activities nearby would be good for us to check out?
3. What's the beach situation there? How far from the electric loop? Sandy or rocky? Any other details would be much appreciated.
TIA!!

RE: My Fellow Maryland Campers(and Firefighters)

Hi, all -- we're from western central MD near the Potomac. This summer we're trying a few more MD cg to expand our "local" camping experiences. We've enjoyed Point Lookout SP down south -- Greenbrier SP is just ok. We enjoy Harpers Ferry's KOA and go to Gettysburg (neither MD, but close) and Little Orleans often. We'll be trying out Elk Neck this summer and are excited to see it. We're also trying out Ramblin' Pines for a visit to B-more Zoo one weekend. I'd love to go further out west and try out some WV cg near Davis -- Canaan Valley and such. That's a great thing about MD -- so many other states' benefits so close by!
Happy season!

RE: Looking for wide-ranging trip recommendations

Back in my college days I worked for a van touring company that catered to foreign travelers and I did a couple of camping trips similar to the one you plan -- mine all took the south route though from east to west coasts. Be prepared for long long days of driving -- this country is something big! But you have some beautiful places on your itinerary! Best wishes!
I remember the 4 corners area as especially beautiful with great camping in the public (state and national) parks -- it won't be hard to find them, if I remember correctly - - we just pulled in and got a site most times. I remember loving the Durango area.
As for the East, I'm trying to think of cg near streams and can only come up with Gettysburg CG -- it's a private campground with a very friendly staff and fun stuff for kids. Tent camping is back by the creek, which you can fish from or wade in. G-burg is busy in the summertime . . . and HOT and humid, but it's not to be missed if you rarely get to the East. You can easily jump on 81 from G-burg and go down through the mountains of VA and NC, etc.
I second the recommendations for state/national park camping and for bug spray . . . And I'll say again how hot and humid it gets as you near and drop below the Mason Dixon Line into the southeast in July. Keep hydrated and take advantage of places to swim.
Have an awesome time!!

RE: Hershey, Pa.

If the park is not your only destination in the area, maybe you'd like to consider the beautiful little CG beside Dutch Wonderland called Old Mill Stream Campground. We have little ones and so take advantage of the park there, but it would be a lovely place even if you don't use Dutch Wonderland. Right off Route 30, but not inundated with road noise somehow. Near loads of outlets -- right by a stream with a cow meadow on the other side. Wonderful, clean RV park.

Labor Day - MD/PA/WV/VA area - help us decide

So, we have 2 young DD (2 & 4) and a popup.
We had thought about Raystown Lake, but can't decide on anything.
Here are our stipulations for you to help us :)
- within 2 hours of Sharpsburg, MD
- need electric at site, water to fill up at least, dump station at least
- G wants to be near a beach (lake most likely) for the kids to play and swim (preferably walking distance, but not necessary)
- I'd like some activities or something to entertain the kids close by
- the little one is a rambler - the steep drops at some Raystown sites scare me - any specific recommendations at those campgrounds to keep in safe sites would be helpful -- but it doesn't have to be Raystown :)
We're really open to ideas and just want a special place to spend the long weekend together.
TIA!!

RE: Antietem and Harpers Ferry parking

Hi! We actually live on that Harpers Ferry Road! :) No joke! It's a great little road, but little is the operative word here. There's a bridge across from HF itself that I don't think I'd want to encounter a big rig on, and I don't know that you could make it under the railroad bridge after that for sure. In any case, this area is certainly worth your time to explore if you could drop the camper somewhere to drive around.
Gettysburg is a good hour and more away.
Ironically enough, I just checked out the Hagerstown KOA the other day. It's not exactly close to Sharpsburg or Harpers Ferry to make it worth the move from Gettysburg, and it's kind of dumpy looking to be honest. We've stayed at the KOA in Harpers Ferry and really like it a lot. They have a huge parking lot and so if you can't check in until later, maybe at least you could drop the camper for a while.
I agree that Shepherdstown is a great little place for a meal while you're around.
If you like history, you'll love this place, and Harpers Ferry should definitely be on your list to see. There's just something about it . . .
Best wishes!
